  • Walmart announced a deal to purchase Vizio. Vizio, headquartered in Irvine, California, is well-known for its affordable TVs, but Walmart is interested in Vizio’s advertising business and access to user data.
  • According to Walmart, they’re buying Vizio for about US$2.3 billion, pending regulatory approval and meeting other closing conditions.
  • Additionally, as stated in the announcement, Vizio can cancel the deal within 45 days if it receives a better offer.
  • A report from the WSJ mentioned that Walmart, along with Sam’s Club, is usually the biggest buyer of Vizio products in terms of sales.
  • However, Walmart’s interest in acquiring Vizio isn’t just about selling more low-cost TVs, as Walmart already sells its own “onn.” brand TVs. Instead, Walmart sees an opportunity to strengthen its advertising business called Walmart Connect.
  • Vizio makes money by showing ads on its SmartCast operating system and free content available on its TVs. Walmart believes that buying Vizio will help attract more advertisers, especially since Vizio already has relationships with over 500 advertisers, including many big companies.
  • Walmart Connect, previously known as Walmart Media Group, sells different types of ads, like those on Walmart’s website, app, and in stores.
  • Walmart has over 4,700 locations where it displays ads on screens, like TVs and checkout machines.
  • While Walmart mainly makes money from selling groceries, which have low-profit margins, ads bring in more profit.
  • Walmart wants Walmart Connect to become one of the top 10 advertising businesses. Right now, the biggest advertising companies are Alphabet, Amazon, and Meta.
  • In Walmart’s last fiscal year, which ended in January 2023, the ad business made less than 1% of its total revenue, which was US$2.7 billion.
  • However, in its latest financial report for the fourth quarter of fiscal year 2024, released today, Walmart said its ad business grew by 33% globally, including a 22% increase in the US compared to the same quarter in the previous year.

Vizio Advertisement Campaign  Statistics

According to the graph below, the VIZIO Ads campaign had similar results to those of the control group in terms of basic stats like “awareness.” However, it outperformed industry benchmarks with significantly higher rates in Ad Recall, Favourability, and Customer Lift. Moreover, there were increases in awareness, unaided awareness, and consideration.

(Source: platformplus.vizio.com)

  • Particularly, Brand Favorability saw significant increases with up to 9 exposures, and there were ongoing increases beyond that.
  • The campaign also established strong messaging with viewers, resulting in positive improvements across all surveyed brand attributes for the retailer. Notably, perceptions related to having attractive shoes for oneself or children were enhanced, as was the availability of a good selection of children’s shoes.

(Source: platformplus.vizio.com)

  • This type of information is what brands need to see how well their efforts are working. It’s not just about basic stuff like awareness but also about important things like intent and consideration. And all these numbers can be broken down even more by key demographic groups like age and gender.

Key Operational and Financial Metrics of Vizio

Here are some important metrics that are used to understand the business and make decisions:

  • Smart TV Shipments: This measures how many Smart TVs we send to stores or directly to customers. It’s crucial because it drives most of our revenue, helps more people use our SmartCast system, and generates income.
  • SmartCast Active Accounts: This counts how many VIZIO Smart TVs have used the SmartCast system at least once in the last 30 days. It shows us how many engaged users we have and how much money we can make.
  • Total VIZIO Hours: This is the total time people spend using our Smart TVs. It helps us understand how much money we can make from our products.
  • SmartCast Hours: This is how long people spend using our SmartCast platform to watch shows or use apps. It tells us how popular our system is and how much money we can make from it.
  • SmartCast ARPU (Average Revenue Per User): This tells us how much money we make from each SmartCast user on average. It helps us see if we’re making more money from our users over time.
  • Device Gross Profit: This is how much money we make from selling devices after subtracting their cost. It’s affected by how many people want to buy our products and how efficient our supply chain is.
  • Platform+ Gross Profit: This is how much money we make from our Platform+ services after subtracting their cost. As our business grows, we expect to profit more from these services.

Conclusion

In 2023, Vizio revealed that device sales contributed to most of its revenue, accounting for 64%. However, the revenue generated from device sales, including smart TVs and sound bars, decreased from 2019 to 2023. Meanwhile, the revenue share from Platform+ grew during this period. Platform+ encompasses the SmartCast operating system, offering streaming apps like Netflix, HBO Max, and Vizio’s free ad-supported streaming TV (FAST) service WatchFree+. It also includes Inscape, enabling Vizio to deliver targeted advertisements to its customers.
